Manager Doug Rader signed a two-year contract extension with the Angels today, the team announced at an Anaheim Stadium news conference. Financial details were not announced.

“The announcement represents an important phase in our preparation for the 1991 season,” Angels General Manager Mike Port said. “Doug has displayed the many qualities necessary to formulate a successful and winning program.”

Rader is finishing his second year as the Angels manager. He has worked under one-year contracts both seasons. The extension puts him under contract through the 1992 season.

Rader, 46, guided the Angels to a 91-71 record and a third-place finish in the American League West last season. Unexpectedly, the team was in contention for the division championship most of the year.

It has been a different story this year, however. The Angels dropped out of contention early in the season and currently have a 74-75 record. They are in fourth place in the AL West, 21 games behind the first-place Oakland Athletics with 13 games remaining on their schedule.

Rader also managed the Texas Rangers in 1983-84 and for 32 games in 1985. They were 77-85 and finished third in the AL West in 1983 and 69-92 for a seventh-place finish in 1984. Rader was fired with the Rangers at 9-23 early in the 1985 season.
