SPORTSCOPE : Pepperdine, San Diego State Play in Volleyball

The 14th-ranked Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (7-2 as the week began), which finished second in last week’s tournament at the University of New Mexico, will play host to No. 15 San Diego State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Firestone Fieldhouse.

At Albuquerque, N.M., the Waves defeated Louisiana State in five games and Western Michigan in three, but lost to New Mexico in three. Pepperdine middle blocker Lesli Asplund and teammate Carolyn Hueth, a setter-outside hitter, were named to the all-tournament team, and Asplund was named the West Coast Conference player of the week.

The second-ranked UCLA men’s soccer team (6-0-1 at the start of the week) will play host to the University of San Francisco at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North Soccer Field on campus.

Joe-Max Moore scored his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick as the Bruins defeated St. Mary’s, 1-0, on Sunday. Moore is the team’s second-leading scorer with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Bill Thompson leads with 19 points on seven goals and five assists.

The second-ranked UCLA water polo team, 7-0 after winning last week’s UC Irvine Tournament, will compete this weekend in the Brown University Tournament. On Friday, the Bruins will meet Massachusetts. On Saturday, they will face Harvard, Bucknell and Princeton. On Sunday, UCLA will play Iona and Brown.

At Irvine, UCLA defeated USC, 7-6, in the final. The Bruins also defeated Pepperdine, 10-4; UC San Diego, 14-3; No. 3 Stanford, 12-6, and No. 4 Cal State Long Beach, 8-5. Junior Stefan Pollmann scored 17 goals, more than any tournament player, and leads the Bruins this season with 22 goals.

The No. 7 Pepperdine water polo team, 3-4 after a fifth-place finish at the Irvine tournament, will play host to No. 14 UC San Diego on Friday at 4 p.m. at Raleigh Runnels Pool.

At the tournament, the Waves were 3-2 and finished in fifth place. Pepperdine defeated No. 4 Cal State Long Beach, 8-6; UC San Diego, 8-6, and Irvine, 10-9. They lost to No. 2 UCLA, 10-4, and No. 3 Stanford, 11-7. Pepperdine’s Henry Rabello has a team-high 13 goals this season, including 12 at Irvine.

The UCLA women’s cross-country team, which won the Fullerton Invitational two weeks ago, will compete Saturday at the San Diego State Invitational.

The UCLA men harriers will not run this weekend. Last week they finished third with 81 points at the Fresno State Invitational, behind first-place Fresno State and UC Irvine with 76. Freshman Eliazar Herrera led the Bruins with a fifth-place finish, running the five-mile course in 25:20.1.

The Pepperdine men’s and women’s cross-country teams will play host to Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 9 a.m. At last week’s Whittier Invitational, the Wave women finished third and the men 12th, The Pepperdine women were led by Shelly Gravel, who placed 11th over five kilometers in 21:06 and by Jenny McGuire, who was 15th in 21:14.

The Pepperdine women’s golf team won the Glenn (Red) Jacoby Collegiate Invitational last week at Laramie, Wyo. The Waves scored 947 for 54 holes to 975 for second-place Wyoming. Pepperdine was led by Ashley Adleta, first with 229; Jody Cosgrove, second with 236, and Kristy Park, fourth with 238.

The United States Paddle Tennis Assn. will hold national doubles championships on Saturday and Sunday at Venice Beach. The competition is for players in C through open divisions.

The eighth annual Venice Backyard Volleyball Championships will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at four homes on Harding Avenue between Grandview and Naples avenues. Sean Fallowfield and Mark Lennon are defending champions in the matches for two-player teams. Admission is free.

The second-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team (7-1 overall, 2-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference as the week began) will play Friday at California (4-4, 2-0) and Saturday at No. 5 Stanford (5-0, 2-0).

Last week the Bruins defeated Washington and Washington State, each in three games. Bruin outside hitter Jenny Evans leads the team with 128 kills and 18 service aces and is second with 99 digs and a .281 hitting average. Outside hitter Natalie Williams has a team-high .297 hitting average and is second to Evans with 101 kills.

The fifth-ranked UCLA women’s golf team will begin the season next week, competing Monday through Wednesday at the University of Oregon Tournament. The Bruins are led by returning players Debbi Koyama, Christy Erb, Elizabeth Bowman and Carrie Leary.

The Bruin men golfers, who finished sixth at the Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational in their opener two weeks ago, will play Friday through Sunday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Tournament in Dalton, Ga.
