‘Henry & June’ Coming Soon: Universal Pictures has begun contacting film exhibitors about an Oct. 5 opening date for Philip Kaufman’s “Henry & June,” even though a hearing on the film’s adults-only X rating won’t be held until Oct. 3. “We are confident that (the X rating) will be overturned, so we are booking it as an R,” a studio spokesman said. If the studio’s confidence is not rewarded, exhibitors may be left holding an open date. Universal Chairman Tom Pollock has stated that the studio will not release “Henry & June” with the MPAA’s X rating, and it would be impossible to edit a softer version, get it rated R and strike new prints in the two days between the hearing and the scheduled release.
