Supervisors, Airport Officials Buffeted by Traveler Turbulence

Share

When I left the old terminal at John Wayne Airport on Thursday of last week, the passengers were three deep at the gate, with Delta and Continental boarding lines mixed up in places. Arriving back at the new terminal on opening day was a great improvement.

However, I have two suggestions: 1) benches outside the terminal on the arrival level so there is somewhere to sit while waiting to be picked up and 1) placing the taxi stand across the street, or at least to the far left or right of the baggage claim exit.

The curb side, directly in front of the baggage claim areas, is reserved for taxis only. When you walk out to wait on the curb for your ride, you must either walk to the left or the right for quite some distance before your ride can pull over to the curb and stop to allow you to get in the car or the driver picking up a passenger at the curb is forced to double park (a cause of congestion at the old terminal).

The taxi lobby did well by getting priority placement.

However, if one is catching a cab, you locate the cab stand. I caught many cabs at the old airport and never had trouble finding them across the street from the terminal.

I hope that the county and airport officials remain flexible at this time in order to make the airport not only beautiful, but functional.
