Foundation to Seek $50,000 for Ventura Schools

Officials from the Ventura Unified School District Education Foundation will try to raise $50,000 to provide money for educational programs not covered in the district budget.

The nonprofit group raises funds to increase the quality of education in Ventura schools. Teachers apply for grants from the foundation to buy materials, classroom equipment or other aids for teaching music, fine arts, math and science.

Part of the fund will be used for library renovation, foundation Executive Director Sylvia McGinnis said.

She said foundation workers will go door to door beginning next month to seek donations of $150 to $500 from businesses.

The foundation, formed four years ago in response to inadequate and unstable state funding, will serve a vital function this year because of state budget cuts in public education funding, district officials said.
