Deplorable Conditions at Los Angeles Zoo

Share

Doesn’t Thomas ever bother to walk his turf? And if so, why does he need the U.S. Department of Agriculture to inform him of deplorable conditions he could see with his own eyes?

Thomas asks of John Grandy and Humane Society members, “Who the hell are these people? . . . They’re just people off the street.” Dr. Grandy is a professional wildlife biologist, as I would hope Thomas is. As to people off the street, it is for them, their enlightenment and enrichment that these creatures were deprived of natural lives and liberty.

However, Thomas is not the only one to bear responsibility. The city approved the outmoded planning that created this inadequate facility. The socialite board’s inventiveness has perhaps gone more to fun parties than to devising happier times for the animals.

And shame to us of the public who stay away out of the sadness that a day at the zoo provokes instead of raising hell that it is so.
