Darryl Lewis returned an interception 52 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, then made a game-saving tackle of Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave at the six-inch line with nine seconds to play to spark No. 18 Arizona’s 22-17 Pacific 10 victory over the Ducks Saturday night at Tucson.

Arizona, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10, was trying to run out the clock when it came up short on a fourth-down play at the Oregon 30 with about four minutes left.

Musgrave completed four passes, the last a 37-yard play that Michael McClellan carried to the Arizona three-yard line with 1:39 remaining. Three running plays took the ball to the one.

On fourth down, Musgrave rolled out and attempted to dive into the end zone, but Lewis tackled him about six inches shy of the goal line.

Musgrave was intercepted four times in the second half by Arizona, which came back from a 14-10 halftime deficit to hand Oregon its first loss in three games. It was the conference opener for both teams.

Lewis’ interception, his second of the half, put Arizona ahead, 19-14, with 5:54 left in the third quarter. He returned his first interception 41 yards with about 11 minutes to go in the quarter, setting up Gary Coston’s 21-yard field goal that reduced the Oregon lead to 14-13.

Lewis, from Nogales High in La Puente, also had a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown called back by a penalty in the first quarter.

Coston kicked his third field goal, a 25-yarder, to extend the Arizona lead to eight points with 2:09 to go in the third. Cornerback Bobby Roland’s 14-yard interception return had given Arizona the ball at the Oregon 29.

Gregg McCallum kicked a career-best 51-yard field goal with 8:50 to play to cut Arizona’s lead to 22-17.

Musgrave had thrown 81 consecutive passes without an interception before having four picked off in the space of 13 attempts in the second half.

Musgrave, who came in averaging 270 yards a game, missed his first six passes and hit only three of his first 13. But he threw first-half touchdowns of five and six yards to tight end Jeff Thomason for a 14-10 lead at intermission. He finished with 22 completions in 41 attempts for 258 yards.

The Ducks trailed, 10-0, when they caught a break late in the first quarter. An Arizona clip nullified Lewis’ punt-return touchdown, and after forcing the Wildcats to punt, Oregon cashed in on a 10-play, 86-yard drive, with Musgrave hitting Thomason for the first score.

Washington State 41, California 31--Quarterback Brad Gossen threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the Cougars to a Pac-10 victory at Pullman, Wash.

The Cougars (2-2, 1-0) used sophomore running back Shaumbe Wright-Fair to pick apart Cal (1-2, 0-1). Wright-Fair rushed for 134 yards in 26 carries and scored a one-yard touchdown.

Gossen hit wide receiver C.J. Davis and tight end Clarence Williams for scoring strikes of 21 and two yards, then scrambled 17 yards for the Cougars’ final touchdown. Running back Rich Swinton added a one-yard touchdown run.

Gossen completed 21 of 27 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Cal quarterback Mike Pawlawski completed 24 of 35 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.

Cal tailback Anthony Wallace rushed 24 times for 150 yards.

Stanford 37, Oregon State 3--Jason Palumbis completed his first 11 passes and Glyn Milburn and Tommy Vardell led a 296-yard ground attack at Stanford.

Stanford, venting the frustration of last-minute losses to Colorado and UCLA, ran up its most lopsided victory since it crushed Washington State, 44-7, three years ago. That same year Stanford beat Oregon State, 38-7.

Stanford Coach Dennis Green enjoyed his biggest victory since he arrived last year after leaving the Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers as receivers coach.

The Cardinal, who ran up 425 total yards and allowed Oregon State only 187, took control from the start when Ron Redell made the first of four interceptions against the Beavers on the fifth play from scrimmage. Palumbis then led a 65-yard drive that ended in a three-yard touchdown pass to Milburn.

That began a 31-0 first-half assault by Stanford that featured a six-yard touchdown run by Palumbis, touchdown dives of one and three yards by Vardell and a 25-yard field goal by John Hopkins.
