This week’s release of “Texasville” is prompting the re-release of the seminal 1970s epic “The Last Picture Show” with six minutes of previously unseen footage.

Director-screenwriter Peter Bogdanovich said “The Last Picture Show” will be re-released two weeks after the opening of its sequel, “Texasville.” The new film, which debuts Friday, had its world premiere Saturday in Dallas.

Bogdanovich said “The Last Picture Show” will be released in 10 markets. It will also be released on videocassette and laser disc. The film garnered eight Academy Award nominations, with Cloris Leachman and Ben Johnson winning Oscars for best supporting actress and actor.

Additional footage is sprinkled throughout the original but mainly adds a scene in which Jacy Farrow (Cybill Shepherd) is seduced on a pool table. The original sound was lost, so Shepherd had to re-record it while on the “Texasville” set.

“I had to breathe to myself having sex 20 years ago,” Shepherd said at Saturday’s premiere.

Bogdanovich said moviegoers will be able to understand “Texasville” without having seen its predecessor.

“Texasville” shows the once-youthful characters from the earlier movie struggling with middle age in the fictional town of Anarene.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity to play a character 35 years later,” Shepherd said. “It gave me an opportunity to play something I had never played before and take some chances I hadn’t taken before.”
