An unidentified man, suffering from multiple stab wounds, stumbled into the lobby of a downtown hotel Sunday evening, collapsed on the floor and died, police said.

The man entered the Serra Francis Hometel at 943 10th Avenue at 5:25 p.m. and died at the scene, said a spokesman for the San Diego Police Department. Paramedics responded, but the man was dead by the time they arrived, he said.

Police believe the stabbing occurred at 917 10th Ave. and that the man fled the scene to seek help at the hotel, the spokesman said. Witnesses told police that a fight had broken out at that address and that the suspect fled shortly before the victim reached the hotel, the spokesman added.
