Actor Corey Feldman, who has campaigned against drug use and is featured in an upcoming video about drug addiction, was charged Monday with possession of heroin following his second arrest on drug charges since March, authorities said.

Feldman, 19, who has appeared in such films as “The Goonies,” “Gremlins” and “Stand by Me,” was arrested Thursday after Los Angeles police detained him because they believed he had stolen a car, a suspicion that proved false, Sgt. Gil Rivera said.

But a check of Feldman’s record showed he had three outstanding traffic warrants, and officers conducting a pre-booking search found two balloons containing one-third of a gram of heroin in Feldman’s socks, Rivera said. The heroin has a street value of no more than $20, Rivera said.

Officers found Feldman sitting in the back of a parked BMW in the 5200 block of Corteen Place in North Hollywood about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The officers initially believed the car, which had a broken rear passenger window, might have been stolen, but they later determined it had been leased to Feldman, Rivera said.

The Beverly Hills resident spent about five hours in the Police Department’s Van Nuys jail before posting $5,000 bail on the drug charge and $729 bail for the traffic warrants, Rivera said.

An arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 1 in Van Nuys Municipal Court.

In March, Feldman was arrested after officers who had stopped him for a traffic violation found 25 balloons of drugs in his car. He has pleaded innocent to felony charges of possessing heroin and cocaine for sale stemming from that arrest.

Feldman’s publicist, Jeff Sullivan, said the actor had participated in an intensive, two-week drug addiction program after his March arrest, but now intends to enroll in a longer-term program.

Sullivan also said Monday that Feldman had begun attending a 12-step recovery program, similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, after his earlier arrest. A drug counselor accompanied the actor during filming last month in Seattle for an upcoming feature film, Sullivan said.

Also, Feldman’s contract calls for periodic drug testing during production of the film because “we felt we couldn’t take a chance with any actor in an unstable situation,” David O’Malley, the film’s writer, director and co-producer, has said.

Two years ago, Feldman participated in the nationwide “Just Say No” to drugs campaign, in which young entertainers spoke to schoolchildren and other groups about the dangers of drugs, Sullivan said. Feldman is also featured in an educational video titled “Dealing With the Addict in Your Life,” scheduled for release next month.

Feldman faces a maximum of three years in jail if convicted of the latest alleged drug offense.

In addition to facing trial in the earlier drug case, Feldman is scheduled to appear Oct. 2 in Beverly Hills Municipal Court on one of the traffic warrants and must appear Oct. 16 in Van Nuys Municipal Court on the remaining warrants, Rivera said.
