Toll Roads

Share

What an insult to people who work for a living. First we get slapped with a guilt-generated nickel-a-gallon gasoline tax, then the Mideast crisis gives oil companies an excuse to jack up fuel prices even more. Now we’re going to pay daily coins for the awesome privilege of using “quality” freeways which will, in Gov. Deukmejian’s words, “best serve the public.”

All of the toll roads that I’ve driven back East are not maintained any better than “free” roads. I don’t know how many toll roads I happened to get suckered into--during a nonstop drive from New Jersey to Chicago--but all I remember is the pain of fooling around with loose change at slow toll gates in a heavy rainstorm--and then maneuvering my way through many miles of ground-up pavement and construction detours on the toll roads themselves!

There are a lot of things that we don’t need to import into California from back East--one of them is toll roads.
