Alfred Kouzel; Leading Cartoonist

A memorial service is scheduled today in Long Island for Alfred Kouzel, 67, an Academy Award-winning cartoonist who died Sept. 6 at a hospital in Trostberg, West Germany, where he was being treated for cancer.
A resident of Long Island, Kouzel began his career in animation after graduate work at UCLA, where he produced several award-winning films.
His “The Juggler of Our Lady” won prizes at the Brussels World’s Fair. In 1960, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave him an Oscar for his adaptation of Jules Feiffer’s “Munro,” about a youngster mistakenly drafted into the Army. He also was honored for his work in 1986 on “The Muppet Babies,” based on the Jim Henson characters.
Kouzel formed Ariel Productions with Eli Bauer, producing 65 syndicated cartoons. Earlier, he worked on the “Flintstones” and “Yogi Bear” series for Hanna-Barbera Productions.
Survivors include his wife Daisy, two daughters, a brother and a sister.
