Oxnard Police Chief Robert Owens, who was rushed to the hospital after collapsing this week, was in serious but stable condition Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Owens, 59, has been at St. John’s Regional Medical Center since Sunday, when his heart apparently stopped beating momentarily and he suffered a blackout, said Dr. S.N. Charles Cho, Owens’ private physician.

Cho said Owens would still be experiencing an irregular heartbeat if a temporary pacemaker had not been implanted.

Doctors have completed tests and are waiting to see if Owens’ heart returns to a normal rhythm, Cho said.

William Cady, assistant chief of police, said Owens, who joined the Oxnard Police Department more than 20 years ago, seemed better.

“He’s feeling real good today,” Cady said. “He’s in good spirits.”
