NATION : 3 Senators Oppose Souter

WASHINGTON — Three Eastern liberal senators today announced that they will vote against confirming the nomination of Judge David H. Souter to the Supreme Court, based on his failure to endorse the right to abortion.
“The right of privacy is a basic promise of American life,” Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.) said. “We should not entrust it to a jurist who cannot agree whether it exists or to whom it applies.”
Bradley was joined by New Jersey Democratic colleague Frank Lautenberg and Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), one of two women in the Senate. Mikulski said that because Souter refused to state his position on abortion, “we must fear the worst.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote Thursday. No members of that panel have said they will oppose Souter, and seven of its 14 members have said they will vote in favor.
