Four Long Beach teen-agers are being held without bail in connection with the kidnaping of two women outside a Torrance high school and the shooting of a man who tried to come to their aid, authorities said.

The incident began late Wednesday night when the suspects--riding in two cars--approached the Torrance women, ages 27 and 28, who were in a red pickup truck in the South High School parking lot. Three of the youths forced the older woman into one of the cars, while the fourth drove off in the truck with the other.

“This was a random selection of two young women,” said Sgt. Ron Traber. “These girls were waiting for their boyfriends who were playing basketball in the school gym.”

Traber said the four teen-agers were believed to be members of a Long Beach Crips gang who were “just out cruising.”

One of the masked suspects shot Greg Spaan, 26, of Torrance after he emerged from the gym to investigate the disturbance. Spaan, a jailer for the Torrance Police Department, was hit by a bullet in the hip as he attempted to return to the gym to call police. He was treated and released at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

Police spotted the red pickup at Pacific Coast Highway and Madison Street and arrested the driver, Courtney Perkins, 18, of Long Beach. The 27-year-old woman, whose name was not released, had been dropped off unharmed at Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant at Pacific Coast Highway and Hawthorne Boulevard, police said.

Investigators traced the three other suspects Thursday to a Chestnut Avenue home in Long Beach where Torrance and Long Beach officers arrested Richard Evans and Terris Wade, both 19, and a 17-year-old whose name was not released. Police also recovered two handguns and a shotgun.

The 28-year-old woman, who police said had been raped by at least two of the suspects, also was found at the house. She was treated and released at a Long Beach hospital.

The four suspects were booked at Torrance police headquarters for attempted murder, kidnaping, robbery and grand auto theft. The three suspects arrested in Long Beach also were booked on suspicion of rape, police said.
