For the second time in three seasons, the Oakland Athletics reached the 100-victory mark, defeating the Texas Rangers, 4-1, Friday.

Rickey Henderson had a single in the third inning to spark a three-run burst that was all Oakland starter Mike Moore (13-14) needed at Arlington, Tex.

By going two for four, Henderson raised his average to .326. Rafael Palmeiro of Texas, also chasing George Brett in the batting race, was one for four and is hitting .324. Brett, who did not bat against the Angels’ Chuck Finley, is batting .330.

After two poor outings, Moore went 6 1/3 innings, giving up a run and seven hits. Dennis Eckersley pitched the ninth for his 46th save.

“It’s nice to win 100,” said Manager Tony La Russa, whose team won 99 last year, “and it shows we have a pretty good team. But what we’re concentrating on now is to get ready for the playoffs.”

Detroit 3, Minnesota 1--The Tigers’ Tony Phillips, Chet Lemon and Travis Fryman each hit home runs at Tiger Stadium. However, Cecil Fielder, who needs one more to reach 50, had only a single in four at-bats. Jack Morris (14-18) went 7 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out eight, to gain the victory.

Baltimore 2, Cleveland 0--Ben McDonald (8-5) pitched a four-hitter at Cleveland for his second shutout. His other came in his first major league start July 21.

The Orioles have won nine of their last 11.

New York 7, Milwaukee 2--Steve Adkins held the Brewers hitless for six innings at Milwaukee and earned his first major league victory. Greg Vaughn led off the seventh with a double. Adkins gave up a run and four hits in eight innings. Jesse Barfield and Randy Velarde homered for the Yankees.

Seattle 13, Chicago 4--Alvin Davis hit a grand slam in the fifth inning at Chicago and drove in six runs to lead the Mariners.
