CHARITY SCORECARD : $100,000 for Wildlife

Friends of Conservation’s benefit dinner held Sept. 25 at the Bistro Garden raised $100,000. ThH. Snyder Co. hosted and underwrote the benefit honoring FOC founder and chairman Jorie Butler Kent and her husband, Geoffrey. Proceeds will be used to protect and preserve wildlife and habitat environment in East Africa.

* Catholic Charities’ Angel’s Flight received a $12,000 check from Friends of Angel’s Flight on Sept. 19 at its annual luncheon at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club. The money will be used to provide food, shelter, clothing and counseling services to homeless children and teen-agers at their two facilities in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles.

* Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has received a $100,000 check from Newman’s Own, the food products company founded by actor Paul Newman. The Newman contribution will be used for the endowment fund of the academy’s soon-to-open Center for Motion Picture Study. It will house the Margaret Herrick Library and the Academy Film Archive.

* Museum of Contemporary Art netted $6,000 at the “Style for the ‘90s: The New Guard” fashion show benefit hosted by MOCA Contempories held at Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, on Sept. 17. Proceeds will be used for general operating support for the museum.

* Hollywood Sunset Community Clinic received a $30,877 grant from the California Community Foundation to provide a first-year’s salary for a development director to broaden and stabilize the organization’s funding base. The clinic, since 1968, has served the Silver Lake, Echo Park, East Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles areas with medical services, counseling, AIDS education for the Latino community, legal services and parenting information.

* Operation Exodus, Los Angeles Community Campaign to Rescue Soviet Jews received $300,000 raised by members of the board of Hebrew Union College. Additionally, doctors from the 2nd Generation Club, raised $70,000 for the campaign, along with 50 supporters. Operation Exodus helps to support the cost of transportation, housing, education, job retraining and other relocation and resettlement expenses.

* Olive Crest Treatment Centers for Abused Children is the recipient of a professional volunteer refurbishing project, valued at $25,000, from the Southern California Chapter of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America. PDCA members have a 47-year history of volunteering their time and equipment for charities.

* “Big Green,” Prop. 128, netted $4,000 from donations raised at the Karl Bornstein Gallery, Santa Monica, Sept. 7. The event was hosted by actor Esai Morales.
