The Grand Prize in the Orange County...

The Grand Prize in the Orange County American Institute of Architects’ Invitational Sandcastle Competition, held Sunday in Corona del Mar, has gone to Dougherty & Dougherty of Newport Beach for “Cinderella’s Castle.” In the sandcastle category, Wimberly, Allison, Tong & Goo of Newport Beach won first place for “Castle of the Gods” (which also won the People’s Choice award). Dougherty & Dougherty took second place, and Dan L. Rowland & Associates of Anaheim placed third. In the sand sculpture category, WRC Associates of Newport Beach took first prize. Second prize went to “Man vs. Environment,” a depiction of the Exxon Valdez oil spill by CYP Inc. of Irvine. Florian Martinez Associates of Tustin placed third for an image of a man floating in an inner tube. Criteria for selection included originality, level of difficulty and use of site.
