U.S. Stand on U.N. Convention for Children

Share

“Bush Urges Full Effort for Children” reads The Times’ headline (Page One, Oct. 1) when it should read that Bush shames our nation by refusing to sign the convention for children. His excuse of wanting the right to execute children under 18 years old is as shameful as the real reason--appeasing his ultra-right supporters. These are the people who denigrate and oppose the United Nations. One reason for their opposition is that they believe that children have no rights.

That the President should go along with this influential, tiny, fanatical minority on the occasion of a worldwide convocation for children should raise an outcry even from his own party. The great majority in the United States don’t want to be represented in such a light. Shame on the President.
