A 2-year-old boy was killed Saturday evening and three other people were seriously injured when a hit-and-run driver started a chain reaction that ended with a head-on collision on Foothill Boulevard in Sylmar, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

The head-on collision occurred after the hit-and-run car, which was traveling north, passed some cars on the right and struck the curb. The car then bounced back into the traffic lanes and struck another car, which was traveling north, pushing it into the southbound lane, Officer Charles Markel said.

The dead child, whose identity was not released, was sitting in his mother’s lap in the passenger seat of the southbound car. The child’s mother suffered a fractured hip, a fractured leg and facial cuts and was undergoing surgery Saturday night at Holy Cross Hospital. The driver of that car suffered two broken arms, two broken legs and facial cuts, Markel said.

The driver of the northbound car was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center to be treated for serious head and chest injuries and a broken arm.

The hit-and-run driver was arrested after he drove away from the scene and was involved in another accident. His identity was not released.

No one was hurt in the second collision, Markel said.
