Sammy’s Street: The city of Chicago honored New York native Sammy Davis Jr. by renaming a South Side street in his honor. Sammy Davis Jr. Drive is on 31st Street in what was the center of the city’s black entertainment scene in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. “We are here to salute one who represents the city of Chicago,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. “He did not see color, creed or religion. His career has reflected his compassion and love for people.” Davis died in May of cancer at 64.
