Supervisors’ Support Sought for Prop. 134

Representatives of child abuse prevention groups on Monday urged the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to support Proposition 134, the nickle-a-drink initiative they said would quadruple spending on early intervention programs throughout the county.

Supervisor Ed Edelman has urged the board to support the Nov. 6 statewide ballot measure, which is expected to face opposition from the panel’s conservative majority when it comes up for consideration today.

At a news conference, representatives of local Child Abuse Councils implored the board to support the initiative, which they said would provide $10 million annually to such programs as women’s shelters and hospital trauma centers.

The liquor lobby is spending heavily on advertising to defeat Proposition 134, which opponents contend could lead to an increase in the sales tax and income tax because of an “escalator clause” written into the measure.
