COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : USC : Royster Runs Ahead of Good Company

Mazio Royster’s debut as a starting tailback--he ran for 203 yards and three touchdowns in 34 carries against Washington State Saturday night as a replacement for injured starter Ricky Ervins--was superior to those of USC’s Heisman Trophy-winning tailbacks:

--As a sophomore in 1963, Mike Garrett ran for 58 yards in 11 carries against Colorado.

--As a junior in 1967, transfer O.J. Simpson from City College of San Francisco ran for 94 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries against Washington State.

--As a freshman in 1976, Charles White ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns in 23 carries against Stanford.

--As a junior in 1980, Marcus Allen ran for 132 yards and a touchdown in 39 carries against Tennessee. The year before, in his first game as a starting fullback, Allen ran for 105 yards and a touchdown in 20 carries against Texas Tech.

In his debut as a starter during his sophomore season in 1972, Anthony Davis ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns in 31 carries against Washington State. Davis finished second in the Heisman voting in 1974.
