Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

It took “Glory” two weeks to do what no other movie could do in the last two months--drive “Driving Miss Daisy” out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboard magazine rental chart. “Miss Daisy” slid into second gear, finally slipping to No. 2. “Glory,” a Civil War drama featuring the performance that won Denzel Washington a best supporting actor Oscar, ascended to No. 1 largely because the Civil War is all the rage these days thanks to that lauded PBS TV series. It looks like “Born on the Fourth of July,” which dropped a notch to No. 3, won’t reach the top of the Billboard chart after all. Debuts: “The Fire Birds” (No. 22), with Nicolas Cage and Tommy Lee Jones, and the seamy, unrated “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” (No. 30).

* Disney’s “Peter Pan” jumped from No. 17 to No. 8 in its second week on the chart. More significant, though, is that it shot to No. 1 on the sales chart, which measures sales to video retailers and distributors. At $24.99 it could be the biggest seller in the home-video market this holiday season.
