Cerritos : Pupils Add Personal Touch to Studies About Persian Gulf
For the more than 400 pupils at Carver Elementary School in Cerritos, the Persian Gulf crisis has become part of their daily studies.
The students not only have been studying about the event, but they have also become personally involved by writing letters to American troops there.
During a Monday morning ceremony, the letters were presented to Col. David W. McClenon of the Air Force Reserve. Yellow ribbons were tied throughout the school grounds as symbols of hope that the troops will return safely.
Under a project established by the military, Principal Robert S. Beal said the letters will be sent to individuals who might not otherwise receive mail.
In their letters, the students (who used only their first names) had some questions as well as encouragement for the servicemen.
Third-grader Joseph wanted to know: “How big are your tanks?”
Fourth-grader Sagus wrote: “Dear Armed Force Person: Thanks for defending me and all of America and maybe the whole world.”
