A 40-year-old man was hospitalized with back injuries after his car was struck by a San Diego police car in pursuit of another vehicle Thursday.

Fred Miller of El Cajon was reported in fair condition Thursday at UC San Diego Medical Center after his Ford Tempo was struck by a police car and forced into the center divider on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista.

The police pursuit began about 7 a.m. when the driver of an orange Toyota Celica refused to yield to police near 27th Street and Webster Avenue in Logan Heights, said police spokesman Bill Robinson. Officers who thought the vehicle might be stolen followed the car onto Interstate 15 south and then onto I-5 south.

The driver of the car feigned an exit at the 8th Street off-ramp in Chula Vista but quickly veered back onto the freeway, authorities said. Officers Joseph Steffen and Steve Dubbs also turned back onto the freeway, striking the vehicle driven by Miller and forcing it into the center divider. The driver of the Toyota Celica escaped.
