On a night when offenses were dormant and pass completions were more rare than first downs, Brea-Olinda High School roused itself in the fourth quarter to defeat Anaheim, 14-7, Thursday at Glover Stadium in the Orange League opener for both teams.

The game’s lone touchdown on offense came on Jason Luevanos’ nine-yard pass to Jamie Baraglia, and the subsequent extra point gave Brea a 14-7 lead with 9 minutes 5 seconds remaining in the game.

Until that point each team had scored thanks to its special teams--the Wildcats in the first quarter when Mark Hales blocked Anaheim’s first punt and recovered the ball in the end zone, and Anaheim in the third quarter when Robert Jones returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown.

The touchdown drive, which came immediately after Jones’ punt return, was the only one Brea sustained all night. The Wildcats (4-2, 1-0 in league) got three of their total five first downs as they drove 70 yards for the score.

Lew Morales rushed three times for 25 yards on the drive and Luevanos completed three passes for 43 yards. For the game, Luevanos completed five of nine passes for 49 yards with two interceptions.

Anaheim (2-4, 0-1), which managed 10 first downs, had two chances to score near the end of the game. An interception by Brian Diaz gave the Colonists the ball on their 39-yard line. Anaheim moved to the Brea 30 before Mike Ryan intercepted a Phil Covarrubias pass in the end zone.

Brea fumbled on its third play, giving Anaheim the ball at the 14, but the Colonists couldn’t score.

Anaheim’s Che Garcia broke his wrist in the first half on a pass reception that was called back. The Colonists’ leading rusher will be lost for the season.
