SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV

Share

This could be one of those rare weekends when all four major team sports--football, basketball, hockey and baseball--can be seen on television.

USC continues its quest for a fourth consecutive Pacific 10 Conference title against Stanford beginning at 12:30 p.m. today on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42. UCLA has a week off from conference play and will take on San Diego State at 7 p.m. on Prime Ticket.

The highest ranked team playing on television today is No. 4 Oklahoma, which meets Texas at 1 p.m. on ESPN. The game of the day pits No. 5 Tennessee (3-0-2) against No. 9 Florida (5-0) at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN and 10:30 p.m. on SportsChannel. A week after its upset loss to Stanford and a week before its annual grudge match with Miami (Fla.), eighth-ranked Notre Dame faces Air Force at 10 a.m. on SportsChannel.

In other games involving ranked teams, No. 22 Indiana plays host to Ohio State (9:30 a.m., ESPN) and No. 24 Mississippi visits Georgia (9:30 a.m., TBS). CBS’ game matches Syracuse and Penn State at 11 a.m. (Channels 2 and 8).

Mid-October is usually not the time for must-win situations in the National Football League, but that’s where the Rams (1-3) find themselves Sunday in a 4:30 p.m. game against the Chicago Bears (4-1) on KCAL Channel 9 and TNT.

Other NFL telecasts include the Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Oilers (10 a.m., Channel 4); San Diego Chargers and New York Jets (10 a.m., Channel 39); San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons (10 a.m. Channel 8); New York Giants and Washington Redskins (1 p.m. Channels 2 and 8) and Raiders and Seattle Seahawks (1 p.m. Channel 36).

The Lakers’ first telecast of the Mike Dunleavy era begins at 8 p.m. tonight with an exhibition game against the Portland Trail Blazers on KCAL Channel 9 and KADY Channel 63. NBC launches its National Basketball Assn. coverage with the New York Knicks playing POP (Yugoslavia) for the McDonald’s Open championship at noon today on Channels 4, 36 and 39.

Sunday’s Kings-St. Louis game matches two of the National Hockey League’s biggest stars, Wayne Gretzky and Blues right wing Brett Hull. Prime Ticket’s coverage begins at 7:30 p.m.

If a seventh game is necessary to decide the National League championship between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds, it will air on Channels 2 and 8 today, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:27 p.m.
