A Chatsworth man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter Friday after the four-wheel-drive vehicle he was driving overturned on Mulholland Drive, killing a passenger, Los Angeles police said.

The passenger, Charles Evan Hall, 21, died about 3:30 a.m. when he was thrown from a Chevrolet Blazer near Encino Hills Drive in Encino, Officer Patrick McDermott said. Hall, also of Chatsworth, was a neighbor of the driver, who police identified as John Edwin Both.

Another passenger, Ali Ashari, 18, of Woodland Hills, was seriously injured in the mishap, police said. A third passenger was identified by police as James Thomas Hall, 20, the brother of the man who was killed.

The driver lost control of the vehicle while heading east on Mulholland, causing the car to overturn and his three passengers to be thrown from the vehicle, McDermott said.

After the accident, Both and James Hall managed to turn the vehicle upright and to get Hall and Ashari inside, McDermott said. Then, Both drove to the 4000 block of Hayvenhurst Avenue, where the men started knocking on doors, he said.

A resident called paramedics, but Charles Hall was dead when they arrived, police said. Ashari was taken to Encino Hospital, where he was reported to be in serious but stable condition.

Both was being held at Van Nuys Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, McDermott said.
