Vanderbilt Sunk, 56-6, by Auburn
Stan White threw two touchdown passes to Greg Taylor and Auburn’s special teams scored twice Saturday as the No. 6 Tigers beat Vanderbilt, 56-6.
Auburn, 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Southeastern Conference, took a 42-6 halftime lead and finished with 518 yards, including 301 in the first half.
Quarterback Mike Healey, starting in place of the injured Marcus Wilson for the Commodores (1-4, 1-2), was hurt in the second quarter and freshman Jeff Brothers had to finish the game.
Auburn scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters and two more in the third after the starters left the game.
White, playing only in the first half, connected with Taylor for scoring passes of 18 and 59 yards. Shayne Wasden returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, Auburn’s first touchdown on a punt return since 1987.
On Vanderbilt’s next punt, Larry Young blocked the kick at about the Commodore 20, then chased down the ball in the end zone for another touchdown.
Chad Muilenberg set up Auburn’s first touchdown when he recovered the opening kickoff at the Commodore 16 after a fumble by Mark Johnson. Tony Richardson later scored from the two.
Richardson also had a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter. James Joseph and Alex Smith scored Auburn’s other touchdowns on short runs.
