BIG WEST ROUNDUP : San Jose Snaps Long Beach Streak
Ralph Martini passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, Sheldon Canley rushed for 168 yards and San Jose State racked up 614 yards in total offense to rout Cal State Long Beach, 46-29, in a Big West Conference game Saturday night at San Jose.
The Spartans (4-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big West) played their first home game in six weeks and broke a three-game winning streak by the 49ers (3-4, 2-2).
Martini has thrown 11 touchdowns passes in the past three games. He was 19 of 35 for 315 yards, and has passed for at least 300 yards in four of the past five games. Canley has 815 yards this season and his 2,080 career yards trail only Gerald Wilhite (2,364) on the all-time San Jose list.
Trailing 10-3 in the second quarter, San Jose scored three touchdowns, two in the final 3:53, to take a 25-10 halftime lead.
Todd Studer, who passed for all four 49er touchdowns, hit Jeff Exum on a nine-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 25-17 in the third quarter. But Martini drove the Spartans 65 yards in six plays and passed to Maceo Barbosa for a five-yard touchdown and 32-17 lead.
Nevada Las Vegas 24, New Mexico State 20--Quarterback Derek Stott scored on a 14-yard run with 3:20 remaining to lift the Rebels over the Aggies, extending the nation’s longest losing streak in Division I to 23 games.
UNLV is 4-3 overall, 3-1 in the Big West.
