South Carolina Player Awaits Clearance

Forward Joe Rhett, who had a pacemaker implanted in February after doctors detected an irregular heartbeat, will be cleared to play basketball this season but probably not in time for today’s opening practice, South Carolina athletic director King Dixon said.

Rhett, a 6-foot-8 junior who averaged 10.6 points and 7.9 rebounds, was given medical clearance to play last month.

But his return has been delayed by questions over legal responsibility for his on-court welfare. Dixon said all issues except a minor point about insurance had been resolved Friday.

Rhett, 20, said he hesitated about playing again when Loyola Marymount star Hank Gathers collapsed and died while playing March 4, shortly after Rhett’s health problems were discovered. Gathers’ death has resulted in lawsuits against school and medical officials.

Neither South Carolina nor Rhett’s parents officially has given Rhett clearance to play. Dixon said both parties would sign the necessary papers when the insurance issue is settled.

Doctors determined Rhett needed the pacemaker after a cardiovascular evaluation found intermittent slowing and stopping of his heart beat for six to seven seconds at a time.
