COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Water Polo Loss Puts Newland on Hold

Ted Newland, coach of the UC Irvine men’s water polo team, will have to wait for his 500th victory as the Anteaters were defeated, 11-9, by UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference game Sunday at Santa Barbara.

Newland has a record of 499-176-5 and has coached Irvine to three national championships, including last season’s title.

Irvine led, 8-7, after three quarters, but Santa Barbara (14-5, 6-0) rallied to score four goals in the final quarter. J.P. Lalonde scored with 6:21 left to tie it, 8-8, for the Gauchos. Ryan Todd put Santa Barbara, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, ahead, 9-8, with a goal at 5:21.

Lalonde led both teams with six goals and teammate Pete Zamoyski had four. Steve Gill led eighth-ranked Irvine (9-9, 1-3) with four goals. Pablo Yrizar and Steve Froning each had two for Irvine.

Newland’s next chance to gain his 500th victory won’t come until Oct. 23, when Irvine plays host to Pepperdine at 7 p.m. at Heritage Park.

In Big West Conference men’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 1, UC Irvine 1 (OT)--Fullerton freshman Ken Hesse drilled a 30-yard kick into the upper-right corner of the goal with 14 seconds left in regulation at Irvine.

Neither team scored in the first 86 minutes, then Irvine’s John O’Brien scored on a free kick. Mike Gartlan had 12 saves for Irvine (4-10-2, 0-4-1). Jay Nettekoven had four saves for Fullerton (5-5-3, 3-2-1).

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

San Jose State 3, UC Irvine 2--Kim Collins had 20 kills as Irvine (6-12, 2-7) took ninth-ranked San Jose State to five games but lost, 15-2, 14-16, 15-7, 13-15, 15-11, at San Jose. Betsy Welsh had 32 kills for San Jose State (14-1, 8-1).

Tonya Fuller of the University of San Diego defeated former Corona del Mar High School standout Danielle Scott of Arizona, 6-2, 6-2, for the singles title. Dorey Brandt and Nicole Storto of San Diego State defeated Scott and Banni Redhair, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, for the doubles title.
