‘Marked’ for the Top Spot

For the second week in a row, Steven Seagal proved hard to top at the weekend box office. 20th Century Fox’s “Marked for Death” had ticket sales of $7.4 million, a 30% drop from its opening weekend take, bringing its total grosses to nearly $22 million. With ticket sales of $5 million, Warner Bros.’ WWII drama “Memphis Belle” soared to second place. Among other new titles: Disney / Touchstone’s fantasy “Mr. Destiny” grossed $2.9 million on 727 screens (an average of $4,115), for seventh place. Paramount’s coming-of-age comedy “Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael” was ninth with $1.7 million on 635 screens (an average of $2,762).

* Orion Pictures’ “The Hot Spot”--directed by Dennis Hopper, and starring Don Johnson as a drifter who becomes trapped in a steamy love triangle--grossed $112,188 in limited release on 23 screens, for a modest opening average of $4,878. In its second week, Barry Levinson’s “Avalon” earned $201,574 on seven screens, a huge per-screen average of $28,796.
