Groundbreaking ceremonies for Rancho Santiago College’s new Child Development Center were held Monday at the college’s Orange campus.

The new center will provide child-care service to students attending the Orange campus, which is at the corner of Chapman and Newport avenues. The center will also serve as a laboratory site for students in the college’s Human Development Program.

Officials participating in the groundbreaking ceremony included Orange Mayor Don E. Smith, Orange Unified School District President Jeff Holstein and Rancho Santiago College District Board President Vernon S. Evans.

“The center is the next important step in the continuing development of Rancho Santiago’s Orange campus,” Evans said. “This . . . will give more local residents, those with children, an opportunity to attend classes at the Orange campus.”

Construction of the new facility will begin later this month. It is scheduled to open next August.
