A County Jail inmate remained at large Tuesday after escaping during a medical visit at San Diego General Hospital, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Lorenzo Edward Simmons, 40, a plastics worker from San Diego, was last seen wearing jail clothing--blue shirt and pants--and waist chains with handcuffs, Deputy Larry van Dusen said.

Simmons was one of a group of inmates taken to the hospital Monday for treatment and was going to be returned to the jail that night, Van Dusen said. The nature of his trip to the hospital was not disclosed, but Van Dusen said that Simmons had been referred by a jail doctor to the hospital for further treatment.

How Simmons escaped while handcuffed and under supervision of deputies is being investigated, Van Dusen said. The Sheriff’s Department has notified all county law enforcement agencies of Simmons’ escape, he said.

Simmons had been in jail since Aug. 12 on burglary and robbery charges, Van Dusen said. His bail was $100,000.
