“Dealing With Rooms That Are Faulty by Design” (Savvy Traveler, Sept. 30) failed to criticize the faulty design of bedding. When we enter a hotel room, the first thing we do is bury the ornamental bedspread and blanket at the bottom of the closet. When traveling by car, we carry our own bedding because we don’t want to be exposed to other people’s dirt. We have often wondered when or how often the bedspread and blanket are cleaned. When we travel by air, we carry our European-bought blanket casings and slip them over the blankets.

Hotels would save a great deal of labor in bed-making if they adopted the European system of blanket casings and got rid of the dirt-and-bacilli-collecting, non-functional bedspread. It is about time that the health authorities have a close look at the unhygienic American way.
