Brewing Up a Fund-Raiser
Johann Sebastian Bach’s whimsical “Coffee Cantata” (No. 211) will be performed with theater staging as a benefit for the fifth season of the Ojai Community Chorus. The performance, featuring professional soloists in period costume, will take place 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ojai Presbyterian Church at Foothill Road and Aliso Street in Ojai. The Ojai Coffee Emporium, a co-sponsor, will provide coffee.
The benefit, which will include a small ensemble from the Ojai Community Chorus performing 16th- and 17th-Century works, as well as the Ojai premiere of an original contemporary piece, will be conducted by Charles McDermott, musical director of Thacher School in Ojai.
The “Coffee Cantata” takes a humorous look at the generation gap, circa 1732, centering on a daughter’s love of coffee and her refusal to obey her father, who wants her to give up coffee. The cantata will be sung in English and German (with program translations) accompanied by a baroque string ensemble with flute.
Featured soloists will be soprano Katherine Pilcher, baritone Phil Harvy and tenor Tom Wurzburger.
Suggested donation is $8; $5 for senior citizens and students. Child care will be provided. For more information, call 646-1437.
