Windom’s ‘Thurber’ Not in Catbird Seat
Publicity says William Windom’s 18-year-old one-man show “Thurber,” revived at the Westwood Playhouse, is based on the humorist’s life. The poster says “Windom Plays Thurber.” Neither is true. It’s Windom all the way through, from his apology to his wife for going dry on his opening speech to searching his script for the next Thurber piece to read.
The second act is even not much Windom--mostly slides of Thurber drawings with the actor sometimes rewording the captions or “acting” them out from the dark at stage right. For the uninitiated the program might serve as a primer, but it will send the Thurber fan back to the printed page.
