John F. Sherrel Sr.; Former Restaurant Owner

John F. Sherrel Sr., who owned a restaurant in Burbank for 30 years, has died in a Gulf Breeze, Fla., hospital. He was 81.

He died Thursday of natural causes, said his son, John F. Sherrel II.

A native of Callaway, Neb., Sherrel came to Burbank in 1937 and worked at the Lockheed Corp. during World War II. In the late 1940s, he owned a restaurant called “Cafe” on Magnolia Boulevard in the Magnolia Park section of Burbank. The restaurant, which later moved to San Fernando Road in Burbank, was open for breakfast and lunch and was a popular spot for local police officers. Sherrel closed the restaurant when he retired in the late 1970s.

Sherrel was a longtime member of the Magnolia Park Masonic Lodge No. 715, the Scottish Rite Temple, and past associate patron of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 352 in Burbank. He also was past president of the High Twelve Club and the 1985 recipient of its Hiram Award and was a member of the Al Malaikah Shrine Temple. A longtime resident of Burbank, he moved to Gulf Breeze, Fla., in 1988.
