Tip on Explosives Cache Forces Evacuation of 200
More than 200 Norwalk residents were evacuated from their homes Friday morning while authorities searched a house for explosives in the investigation of the Oct. 9 armed robbery of a PACE store in Downey, officials said.
Downey detectives, acting on a tip, wanted to search the house in the 12700 block of Kalnor Avenue for evidence related to the robbery, Downey Police Lt. Bill Lund said. They called in sheriff’s bomb experts because the tipster said explosives may have been stored at the house, but no explosives were found.
Residents within a 150-yard radius were evacuated for more than an hour as a precautionary measure.
Downey detectives removed some undisclosed possessions from the house for further investigation, police Capt. Lt. Dennis Chelstrom said. No one has been charged in the robbery, which left two policemen wounded.
