Brian Bowker’s fumble recovery in the third quarter set up the go-ahead touchdown as No. 18 Wyoming remained unbeaten with a 17-10 Western Athletic Conference victory over Texas El Paso Saturday night.

A pass from backup quarterback Howard Gasser popped out of the hands of receiver Reggie Barrett, and Bowker returned the loose ball to the Miners’ 13.

Jay Daffer ran 13 yards for the touchdown two plays later as Wyoming improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the WAC.

UTEP (3-5, 1-4) had several opportunities to get even again, one after the Miners blocked a punt by Sean Fleming.

But the Cowboys kept the pressure on Gasser, and the Miners were unable to convert their chances.

Wyoming, which was averaging 32 points a game, had trouble with the UTEP defense all night. Quarterback Tom Corontzos was sacked six times and had two passes intercepted.

Barrett’s nine-yard reception for a touchdown in the second quarter was the 20th of his career, breaking the school record set by Chuck Hughes in 1964-66.
