Brian Brown surpassed the 100-yard mark for the fourth time in five games Saturday, gaining 108 yards in 17 carries to lead UCLA to a 26-17 victory over Oregon State.

Brown’s 41-yard run highlighted a 70-yard, six-play UCLA drive at the beginning of the second half as the Bruins extended a 16-14 lead to a more comfortable 23-14 advantage.

Brad Daluiso kicked a career-best 48-yard field goal on UCLA’s next possession as the Bruins (4-4 overall, 3-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference) avenged an 18-17 loss at Oregon State last season.

But the Beavers, who were 23-point underdogs, didn’t go down without a fight.

Oregon State (1-2, 1-7) got a 23-yard field goal from Jamie Burke on its next possession to make it 26-17 and, after Daluiso missed a 35-yard field goal, the Beavers moved into UCLA territory early in the fourth quarter.

However, Oregon State quarterback Matt Booher was sacked twice in a row, forcing a punt.

Dion Lambert intercepted Booher’s pass at the UCLA 10 to end the Beavers’ final threat.

Brown didn’t play in the fourth quarter, being replaced by Kevin Williams, who in his first extended action of the season gained 78 yards in 14 carries. Williams missed UCLA’s last four games because of a back injury.

The Bruins took a 7-0 lead by moving 89 yards on nine plays the first time they had the ball. Brown capped the drive by scoring on a one-yard dive. The march was highlighted by a 53-yard run by quarterback Tommy Maddox on an option play.

UCLA made it 9-0 on the next scrimmage play. Oregon State was pinned at its two-yard line when Dwayne Owens caught the Bruins’ kickoff and went out of bounds. On first down, Roman Phifer tackled James Jones in the end zone for a safety.

It appeared the Bruins were going to increase their lead when they moved from the Oregon State 49-yard line to the Beavers’ 18 after receiving the free kick. But Esera Tuaolo sacked Maddox and forced a fumble, which Todd Sahlfeld recovered at the Oregon State 42.

Two plays later, Maurice Wilson ran 57 yards to the UCLA one on a flanker reverse, setting up a quarterback sneak by Fred Schweer, making it 9-7.

Oregon State took a 14-9 lead on a five-yard scoring run by Reggie Pitchford with 6:32 left before halftime. The Beavers used 7:43 as they drove 77 yards in 14 plays after a UCLA punt.

The Bruins went back on top, 16-14, on a one-yard run by Kevin Smith with 2:05 left in the half. UCLA drove 44 yards in six plays after a 15-yard punt by Oregon State’s Tim Kollas.

Maddox threw a six-yard scoring pass to Rick Daly to cap UCLA’s 70-yard, six-play march at the beginning of the second half.

Neither team was able to gain 100 yards by passing. Maddox was eight of 17 for 98 yards, and Booher, playing most of the game at quarterback for Oregon State, was 10 of 20 for 77 yards with one interception.

The game was played before a crowd of 42,427 at the Rose Bowl.
