Getting there: Airlines flying round trip from Los Angeles to Jamaica are Air Jamaica, American, Pan Am, Continental and Eastern. Air Jamaica flies nonstop every Saturday to Montego Bay ($480 economy, $694 first-class) and Kingston ($540 and $774). The flight takes about 5 1/2 hours. American, with direct flights daily, charges $416 economy and $1,274 first-class to Montego Bay, $522 and $1,336 to Kingston. Pan Am flies direct Thursday through Sunday, $416 and $1,336 to Montego Bay, $431 and $1,336 to Kingston. Continental has one-stop daily service, $432 and $1,290 to Montego Bay or Kingston. Eastern, stopping in Atlanta, flies Thursday, Friday and Saturday to Montego Bay for $600 and $1,000.

Proof of citizenship, such as an identification card with a photograph, is needed to enter Jamaica. A driver’s license is acceptable, but a passport is best.

An $80 Jamaican (about $10 U.S.) tax is collected at the airport on departure.

Money: American currency is not widely accepted. Exchange rates are best at hotels.

Firefly Hill: Noel Coward’s home is nearest the city of Ocho Rios. It is best to allow hotels on the island to arrange transportation through a tour operator, taxi or rental car. Firefly Hill is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is about 62 cents U.S.
