SOUTHLAND : Traffic Reporter, Pilot Killed
A traffic reporter and pilot were killed early today when their single-engine plane crashed into an embankment along a busy freeway, authorities said.
The plane crashed shortly before 7:45 a.m. about a quarter-mile north of Via de la Valle and Interstate 5, in the Solana Beach area, barely missing a child day care center.
The Grumman aircraft was being leased by Metro Traffic Control. The plane, with a pilot and reporter aboard, was circling over an accident under investigation by the California Highway Patrol near Via de la Valle when it went down.
