SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : San Luis Obispo, Northridge Tie for Championship

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won a share of its first Western Football Conference championship since 1982 with a 6-3 victory over Cal State Northridge Saturday night at Northridge.

The Mustangs (8-1) and Northridge (7-2) tied for the championship with 4-1 conference records.

Daryl McChristian scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter, providing the Mustangs with all the points they would need.

Senior running back Joe Fragiadakis carried a career-high 36 times for 122 yards for the Mustangs.

Redlands 52, Occidental 14--Curt Landreth rushed for 205 yards in 30 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0) won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship with the victory over the Tigers (5-3, 4-1) at Redlands.

UC Santa Barbara 27, Azusa Pacific 23--Brian Hunt completed 40 of 62 passes for 416 yards, but Azusa Pacific (5-2) probably lost a berth in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics playoffs with the loss at Azusa.

Mike Curtius completed 15 of 37 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns for the Gauchos (6-3).

Claremont 27, Whittier 22--Schon Branum gained 140 yards in 26 carries to lead the Stags (2-6, 2-3) over the Poets (0-8, 0-5) in a SCIAC game at Claremont.

La Verne 44, Pomona-Pitzer 7--Chris Nance gained 195 yards in 28 carries and scored two touchdowns--one on a 62-yard pass play--to lead the Leopards (3-5, 2-3) over the Sagehens (3-4, 2-2) in a SCIAC game at La Verne.

Southern Utah 35, Cal Lutheran 10--Brad Matthews passed for 208 yards to lead the Thunderbirds (6-4) over the Kingsmen (2-7) in a nonconference game at Cedar City, Utah.
