COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC’s Hall Second in District Meet

Southern California College’s Sherri Hall finished second to Jenee Ellis of Azusa Pacific in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 women’s cross-country championships Saturday at Morley Field in San Diego.

It was only the second time in six meetings that Ellis has defeated Hall, and both victories have come on the five-kilometer course at Morley Field. Hall, 39, who won the district title in 1988 and finished fifth last year, finished in 18 minutes 27 seconds, five seconds behind Ellis (18:22).

The top five individuals advanced to the NAIA championships Nov. 17 in Kenosha, Wis. SCC’s Amber Coley finished seven seconds out of fifth place, in 18:55, and was a first-team All-District selection.

Westmont won the women’s title with 61 points. Point Loma Nazarene won the men’s with 30 points.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Pacific 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Krissy Fifer had eight kills for Pacific, the No. 3 team in the nation, in a 15-2, 15-6, 15-1 victory in Stockton. Pacific is 21-4, 10-3 in the conference. Fullerton is 6-25 and 2-11.

In the Abilene College indoor invitational men’s tennis tournament:

Irvine’s Roberts advances--UC Irvine’s Mike Roberts teamed with Ota Vozeh of Texas Christian to defeat Irvine teammates Carsten Hoffmann and Neel Grover, 6-3, 6-4, in a doubles semifinal at the Fairway Country Club in Abilene. Roberts and Vozeh will play a team from Arkansas in the final today.

In singles competition, Roberts and Hoffmann each advanced to the semifinals before losing. Roberts lost to Anders Eriksson of Trinity College, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Hoffmann was beaten by Florian Laddenkemper of Texas, 6-4, 6-2.

In nonconference women’s swimming:

UC Irvine 174, San Diego State 93--Freshman Liz Koch won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.97) and 200 backstroke (2:18.11), senior Lisa Williams won the 200 and 500 freestyles (1:59.89 and 5:11.32) and sophomore Grace Moon won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.17) and 200 individual medley (2:17.16) to lead the Anteaters (1-0) at Heritage Park in Irvine.
