Elizabeth Dole

It looks as if the Red Cross has shot itself in the foot for the umpteenth time by naming Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole its new chief (front page, Oct. 24). It may be a happy solution for the Bush Administration and for Mrs. Dole, but it doesn’t do much for this controversial charity, which depends heavily on donations from the general public. By placing a partisan politician at the top, the Red Cross creates unneeded opposition to donations on the part of the majority of the public.

Mrs. Dole, who is probably preparing to seek a higher political office soon, will be paid nearly twice her present pay as a member of the President’s Cabinet, receiving a base pay of $185,000. This comes out of the donations from people like you and me!

Freeloading out of the government trough is one thing, but taking the money from charitable donations is another.
