A 47-year-old Ventura man was killed when the gun he was cleaning accidentally discharged, authorities said Sunday.

Larry Wayne Glaze was pronounced dead at his house at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Coroner Zelmira Isaac said. The death appeared to be accidental, Isaac said. An autopsy is scheduled today.

Glaze’s 15-year-old son, Fred, called police to report the shooting, Ventura Police Cpl. Mike Foster said.

When Foster arrived at the house in the 300 block of South Santa Cruz Street, Fred Glaze was still on the phone talking to police dispatchers. Foster found Larry Glaze lying on the floor upstairs next to a bed. Foster said he found a pistol of unknown caliber with a rag pulled partially through the trigger housing.

Fred Glaze told police that he had last seen his father, a warehouse worker and truck driver for Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., between 7:30 and 8 p.m. when he went to clean his guns, Foster said.
