The Sidelines : Top Seed Gomez Out at Moscow
Unseeded Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden upset top-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador 6-2, 6-4 today at the Kremlin Cup.
“No tragedy. I am in bad shape,” Gomez said. “I wanted to come to Moscow, and if such a tournament will be held next year, I’ll come and play well.”
No. 2 Emilio Sanchez rallied to beat Francisco Clavet 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 and David Wheaton of Deephaven, Minn., took just 48 minutes to beat Eric Jelen 6-3, 6-0 in the shortest match of the day.
Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union beat Amos Mansdorf 6-2, 6-0; Anders Jarryd beat Michael Stich 6-2, 6-0, and Alexander Mronz beat Milan Srejeber 6-3, 6-4.
Marc Rosset beat Javuer Sanchez 7-6, 6-4.
